RE: Becoming UnBEATable in Business

Dear Entrepreneur,

50% of new businesses fail in the first 5 years, (many others only limp along.) Will you beat the odds?

“I believe that our future economic success will be driven by the small business owner with an entrepreneurial mindset. That’s why I’m eager to share these Critical Skill Sets with you so that you too can become an UnBEATable entrepreneur.” – Johanne Edwards

I’m going to cut right to the chase.

The so-called “down economy” doesn’t have to be your reality. There are thousands, even millions of people out there thriving, even today, in this economy.

What’s the difference? How they are thinking, their skill sets and their connection with their purpose and passion. If you’re not one of them, you could easily be, and here’s how:

I have discovered through my own experiences in corporate America and as an entrepreneur myself what it takes to beat the “odds.” I’ve learned it’s not a matter of chance, it’s a matter of skill and intention. There are four critical skill sets everyone needs to become unbeatable as an entrepreneur and to succeed in life. Period.

Four Critical Skill Sets:

A leader who transforms communities and organizations from one culture to another, such as the industrial age to the information age. A transformational leader is someone who is transforming a co-dependent family into one of healthy relationships or someone who has transformed herself from one state of being to another. All of us can and do experience this type of leadership.

Transformation is a basic part of the human experience and is recorded in myth, fairy tale, the Bible, and in song. In fact, most of the stories in the Bible are transformational stories — the before and after as a result of an experience. In myth, Mother Nature transforms her planet from one season to another; in fairy tales, Prince Charming is transformed from frog to prince; in the Bible, Christ is transformed from death to life anew. Transforming ourselves is how we grow; it is how we enter a new state of being that we thought not possible, or could not even conceive of, before the transformation.

The transformational leader is the one who not only transforms others by seeing what they had not seen before, but also, are willing to be transformed themselves. To paraphrase Steven Covey, the transformational leader transforms him/herself from:

Hero to Developer

Commander to Consultant

Order Giver to Mentor

Decision Maker to Value Clarifier

All Powerful to Sharing Power

Confrontational to Collaborative

Note a major difference in management style here: a controlling manager can be referred to as the “buffalo.” The settlers knew that if you killed the head buffalo, the herd would stand around pawing at the ground waiting for someone to tell them what to do. On the other hand, the geese culture is one with shared leadership, with each goose taking a turn at the lead. It is the transformational leader who can transform buffalo to geese.

The transformational leader also notes and responds to the trends that are reshaping the environment and culture. In addition to orchestrating the trend, the transformation leader can decide if a counter trend needs to be developed; for example, the leaders of the conservation movement are countering the trend of wasting the earth’s resources.

Transformation can occur at many different levels: From individual behavioral trends, to conversion of institutions from “I” to team management, to the transfiguration of society’s culture. For the transformational leader to create social change, it is important to understand our cultural heritage, as well as the trends that are driving us beyond the next century.

So, who do you think you are? The frog? The princess? The buffalo? Or the transformational leader? Transforming yourself, your business, your community, the world itself, requires an understanding of our true essence. If you are an eagle, but believe you are a chicken, you will never fly out of the barnyard. And although the barnyard may be safe and secure, to experience who we really are means choosing to leave the safety of what we have always known to experience who we can be and who we may become by challenging ourselves. Choosing to be the eagle is truly a transformation: A transformation from who we thought we were to who and what we really are.

In the work place, we have always expected our boss to acknowledge that he appreciates what we have done. Our children are always asking for our approval. All of us desire to be noticed and applauded for our efforts and accomplishments. Yet, as human beings, we are not very adept at giving or receiving loving acknowledgment.

Acknowledgment is a skill that can be practiced and grown. We have the thoughts (such as, “I should send John a thank you for that extra effort”) and then we don’t act on our good intentions. Or many times we don’t recognize the efforts of others because “we expect rather than accept, so we are always disappointed” in what the other person has done or not done. We put conditions on the outcome and do not reward the attempt to satisfy our desired requests. Our children, our spouses, or employees never feel good enough as their efforts go unnoticed. Acknowledgment is an interesting phenomenon. When you start acknowledging others it gives them permission to acknowledge you. This spreads a more positive attitude of mutual respect, and collaboration is more likely to occur. You have heard the saying “God does not make junk.” In other words, we need to look at people as though they are an awesome creation of God and find those times that they are acting in that powerful, beautiful or awesome way and acknowledge them for it. It will reinforce the behavior that you want to see. Criticism is a negative affirmation that predicts failure and only reinforces the unwanted behavior.

Leo Buscaglia, the author of many books on loving relationships, related this incident: “Several years ago I was teaching my Love Class; we decided to attempt an assignment. We agreed to approach those people in our lives that we valued and loved and express verbally that we “truly loved and appreciated them.” We found that what appeared on the surface to be a simple, natural thing was rather more difficult than what we had imagined. Most of the students were lovingly tongue-tied. Several never completed the assignment. When we discussed and shared our experiences we agreed that it was strange indeed that so many people found it threatening to communicate love! It then became obvious why we hear the voice of love so seldom and when it is heard, it is spoken softly, so shyly. This is true even though we have learned that unexpressed love is the greatest cause of our sorrow and our regrets. We usually wait until people have died to express their value in our lives, to honor them publicly and to express our love for them.” Buscaglia’s class assignment demonstrates that we must give up our fear of being vulnerable and express our appreciation for each other. It is through acknowledgment that you can bring love into your world. Look for the opportunity to give the gift of a positive affirmation; it will make a difference in all or your relationships.

We must also learn to acknowledge and appreciate ourselves. It is OK to bask in the glory of our creation and give ourselves acknowledgment. We can even ask for what we want. We can ask another to acknowledge us for what it is that we have done or created. We can ask for the recognition that we so earnestly desire. What would be wrong with going up to the boss and asking to be commended for accomplishing a major project? More that likely, he/she has noticed, but, did not say anything. Children have no trouble asking to have their needs met, but as grow up, we fear being vulnerable, stop asking for what we need, and assume that other people know what we need and when we need it. We have a scarcity mentality, thinking there isn’t enough for me, so we live in emotional poverty, not getting our emotional needs met.

When you acknowledge others, guess what happens? People like to be around you. You’ll have more friendly relationships. You will be known as generous. Those who can give acknowledgment and encouragement are growing the self-esteem and self-confidence of others. How we receive acknowledgment is another matter. We have a hard time letting in the good stuff and we discount or diminish the other person’s gift, saying things like: “this old thing,” “it wasn’t much really,” “anybody could have done it.” And what do you think we could say instead? What gives honor to the one who has acted out their kind, loving and generous thought of recognition? How about a simple, no explanation “thank you”.

I have had some troubles with my knees and was told that I needed to have knee replacement surgery on both of my legs. I am not one to give in easy and I was determined to find an alternative. While attending a Longevity Conference in Royal Oak with longevity expert David Wolfe, I had the opportunity to talk with David and asked him if there was an alternative to such invasive and drastic measures. His response was yes! He told me about a process called prolotherapy and he thought that there was someone in Michigan who does this healing modality. Well, I found three and chose the doctor in East Lansing. His name is Dr. Pawsat, and his practice is The Center for Optimal Health.

I have had three of these treatments and my legs are healing and I am gaining strength every day. I would like to share with you a little bit about this process. Many athletes are using this process and my hope is that you or someone that you care about may be able to avoid surgery as well.

The treatment is useful for many different types of musculoskeletal pain, including arthritis, back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, unresolved whiplash injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic tendonitis, partially torn tendons, ligaments and cartilage, degenerated or herniated discs, TMJ and sciatica.

First, it is important to understand what the word prolotherapy itself means. “Prolo” is short for proliferation, because the treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in areas where it has become weak.

Ligaments are the structural “rubber bands” that hold bones to bones in joints. Ligaments can become weak or injured and may not heal back to their original strength or endurance. This is largely because the blood supply to ligaments is limited, and therefore healing is slow and not always complete. To further complicate this, ligaments also have many nerve endings and therefore the person will feel pain at the areas where the ligaments are damaged or loose.

Tendons are the name given to tissue which connects muscles to bones, and in the same manner tendons may also become injured, and cause pain.

Prolotherapy uses a dextrose (sugar water) solution, which is injected into the ligament or tendon where it attaches to the bone. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas, which then increases the blood supply, and flows of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself.

Historical review shows that Hippocrates first used a version of this technique on soldiers with dislocated, torn shoulder joints. He would stick a hot poker into the joint, and it would then miraculously heal normally. Of course, we don’t use hot pokers today, but the principle is similar—get the body to repair itself, an innate ability that the body has.

The response to treatment varies from individual to individual, and depends upon one’s healing ability. Some people may only need a few treatments while others may need 10 or more. The average number of treatments is 4-6 for an area treated. The best thing to do is get an evaluation by a trained physician to see if you are an appropriate candidate. Once you begin treatment, your doctor can tell better how you are responding and give you an accurate estimate (This information was gathered from www. prolotherapy.com).

Just think of the millions of dollars spent on joint replacement surgery, when there is an alternative that is safer and wiser. Pass this along to someone that you know who is having joint pain and going down the surgery path. Not everyone is willing to try the new and different, but you can surely give it a try.

Jane went to her doctor; she was experiencing fatigue, lack of sleep, and depression. Her doctor told her that her symptoms sounded like she was under a great deal of stress. He asked Jane where this stress might be coming from. She explained to her doctor that the stress was coming from working with an intolerable boss. That he was so demanding and showed very little appreciation for her efforts and she felt that she could not trust him.

Jane’s doctor suggested that she take a time out. He recommended that she take a medical leave and just get away from it all. He thought a week in the country or a place where she could really relax would do her a world of good. The doctor even suggested that she go without her husband. He said: “you need to take time to reconnect with yourself and set new priorities.”

Jane was excited at the possibility of getting away. She knew instinctively that was just what she needed. She needed the time away to find herself and capture and renew her sense of inner peace. She went home and told her husband of her plans. She booked a bed and breakfast in a quaint country setting, packed her bags, got in her car and she was on her way.

As she drove along the highway a new sense of relief came over her. But, after several hours of the drive, she began to think about her boss. The more she thought about him the angrier she got. She began to clinch her fists around the stirring wheel as she began to spiral down into an emotional state. And as the cortisol and the adrenalin pumped through her body she now found herself back in the same state she was when she went to the doctor.

Now there was nobody with her. No boss, no event or situation to provoke her. There were no job demands or finger-pointing going on. What was it that really caused the stress? Have you ever had an experience like that? What is it that has mastery over us really?

I can make you rise of fall. I can work for you or against you. I can make you a success or a failure. I can control the way you feel and the way you act. I can make you laugh … work… love. I can make your heart sing with joy… excitement… elation… I can make you sick… listless… I can be as a shackle… heavy… attached… burdensome… Or I can be as the prism’s hue… dancing… bright… fleeting… lost forever unless captured by pen and purpose. I can be nurtured and grown to be great and beautiful… seen by the eyes of others through action in you. I can never be removed… only replaced. I am a THOUGHT. (Unknown)

It was her thoughts that caused the stress. If we are to master stress, we first must master our thoughts. It is up to you to capture your thoughts. Our thoughts are our interpretation of our world. These interpretations come from our beliefs which are formed from our past life experiences. Our beliefs give us our thoughts, which then drive our feelings and actions. People and situations cannot make you feel a certain way. It is your reaction to them that makes you feel the way that you feel. No one can make you feel anything. Repeat after me NO ONE CAN MAKE ME FEEL ANYTHING! So it is our perceptions of what is happening that causes all the stress. Here are some of the ways that we can manage our thoughts.

Monitor your self-talk

Stop exaggerating

Let go of judgments and perceptions

Think and visualize what it is that you want, not what you don’t want

Monitor your self-talk: You can start by giving yourself new affirmations to use to manage your self-talk. New tapes to overcome the negative thought tapes that you keep telling yourself about who you think you are and who you think other people are. Something happens, it triggers our past beliefs about others and ourselves. We then have our thoughts about it. We then have our feelings and then we will act out according to that belief.

My daughter Natalie, when she was nine years old, had a hard time with this internal voice. It was like a radio that constantly played negative tunes: I’m not pretty; nobody likes me; I have no friends; I’m not smart; other kids have it better than me. All of these words, this language, were creating a great deal of sadness and stress in her little life. So I sat down with her and we wrote down all the negative statements that were running around in her head, and then we wrote out statements that were the opposite. We called it “Natalie’s Little Chatter Box.” She agreed to read them every morning when she woke up and every evening before bed. As she got older she put them on cassette and played them. This had a wonderful impact on her self-concept, and she brought those positive statements with her into her teens. I liked to share her chatterbox with you.

NATALIE’S LITTLE CHATTER BOX

I am smart.

I am nice.

I am helpful to others.

I am pretty

I am filled with good feelings.

I do the best that I can.

I listen and I learn.

I have a great family, including Charlie (our dog).

I have a lot of good ideas.

I love myself

I don’t care about what other people say, just about what I know to be true.

Everything I need to know is inside of me.

Whatever happens in life, I can handle it.

I am sensitive. And I have so much to give.

I am a responsible human being.

I am loving and caring for others.

I choose to be happy.

My self-esteem is growing every day.

So what do you say to yourself and believe?

Stop exaggerating and catastrophsing: We play catastrophe. Ninety-five percent of what we worry about never happens. We take small things and build them up out of proportion. Notice what stories that you repeat over and over again. That story will give you some clues as to what you say to yourself and believe. Where did the belief come from? How long have you been acting on that belief? How does the belief system of that story drive your feelings, thoughts and actions? Is the story true? It is time to dispute our irrational thinking.

Affirmation #1: “When a situation arises that I am unhappy with I now know that I have options.”

Let go of judgments and perceptions: Practice the law of allowing. “The Universal Law of Allowing means dropping all judgments and all emotional attachments to what others are, have, or do. This is quite different from being tolerant. Being tolerant is not liking what someone else is or does and holding emotion-laden, negative thoughts about them, but letting them be or do it anyway. Practicing The Law of Allowing requires granting to others the same rights you ask for yourself — the right to be, have, and do whatever you choose.” How to Eat an Elephant; A Guide Book for Playing the Game Called Life by R. Robin Cote’. Here’s another affirmation that can help us stay in a state of grace and help’s us with the law of allowing.

Affirmation #2” I always stay in the positive, loving, joyous state of being, regardless of what is going on in my life.”

Honor the Golden Rule, “Do onto others as they would be done onto” and call for you to do likewise. As long as you avoid violating others, violating the rights of others or destroying our collective environment; I will honor your right to be, do, have, express, and experience whatever you choose. Here’s another way of expressing this law:

Affirmation No. 3: “I love you and I accept you even though I may not understand you.”

And as you may already know, if you don’t love yourself, your ability to love anything or anyone else is drastically reduced. You can say this affirmation to allow yourself to be who you are.

Affirmation No. 4: I love myself and accept myself even though I may not understand myself.

This little metaphor from the book “How to Eat an Elephant” best explains this law of allowing: Herbert points toward the window and says, “Do you see that lamp post over there across the yard?” “Yes,” I respond. “Do you have emotional attachment to that post? — to where it is? — to what it does?” “No.”

“When you can hold that same attitude for all of your fellow human beings, you’ll have mastered the Law of Allowing. Our job is simply to allow all others the free will choice to be who they are and do whatever they do. By giving to others the same thing that we ask for ourselves, we walk our own talk. We also become the role models and set the example for others to follow.”

“That lamp post stands there 24 hours every day, seven days every week, and at night, shines light on the surrounding area. That is its nature. That is what it is. That is what it does. If you’re mad, sad angry, jealous, hateful or hold any other negative emotion regarding that post, is it going to change what the post is or what the post does?” “No.” “If you moan and complain to the lamp post, is it going to change what it is or what it does?”

Again I say, “No.”

“If you moan and complain to someone else about the lamp post, is that going to change what it is or what it does?” No.”

“The same is true for our fellow humans. We each are whatever we are, and we do whatever we do. We cannot change another’s nature, and, short of violence or threats of violence, we cannot force them to do other than what they do. And even if we force them to do other than they do, they still remain who they are.”

Think and visualize what it is that you want, not what you don’t want: You can master your thoughts by setting up objective remedies. Establish your goals and the required steps to have them become a reality. Improve your skills and actively search for new alternatives. Get into action to have what it is that you want. If you are in a bad work environment, get back into the job market, up-date your resume and get into action for what it is that you want. And stop being paralyzed by your situation.

Take time to meditate or spend some time out in nature. Find that emotional place that you want to be in and again take action to have it. Begin your day with gratitude and end with an intention of thanks. And instead of justifying how right you are, open up your heart and learn to genuinely forgive. Forgiveness is not enough; you then have to let go.

Affirmation No: 5 “I take responsibility and accountability for my own life experience.”

So instead of living in the future or in the past go where you are certain you will be happier, savor the moment now. Begin to control you mind by controlling your thoughts and look for what the moment is teaching you. And instead of running away from what ever it is that you are afraid of, move into it, toward it, conquer it and gain power over it and be done with it.

So if you feel stressed out. Start by looking at what you think about. Your thoughts are your master. They can make your life a living hell or a joyful paradise. You are the master of your own life when you master your thoughts.
